A Clinical Professor in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Sheffield, UK, Professor Nicolas Martin chairs the FDI 'Sustainability in Dentistry' Task Group. He also leads the Environmental Sustainability in Oral Healthcare research programme at the School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield, UK. This research programme is delivered through a series of highly collaborative and inter-disciplinary projects with three strategic themes: Knowledge transfer and education with the promotion of sustainable practice through preventive, high-quality care and efficient care pathways; (ii) Impact mitigation through life cycle analysis, reduction and recycling of SUPs and plastic packaging waste and; (iii) management of waste dental amalgam in municipal effluent water systems. Prof. Martin leads on the University of Sheffield’s collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and World Dental Federation (FDI) on sustainable dentistry.

FDI Environmental Sustainability in Dentistry - Activities & Resources

The FDI World Dental Federation has taken a lead in the promotion and implementation of environmental sustainability in oral healthcare. It does this through the creation and promotion of key resources, designed to increase awareness and practical approaches to deliver environmentally sustainable oral healthcare for all. These resources are free and readily available for users in oral healthcare settings, education at all levels, industry and society at large.

The Sustainability in Dentistry Task Team provides guidance and scientific expertise to ensure sound implementation of the Sustainability in Dentistry project, which aims to map out strategies and implement solutions to help reduce the environmental impact of dentistry and the dental industry.
